The Sweet Delight of Alfajores: A Taste of South American Traditions

Updated: Apr 5

The origins of Alfajores can be traced back to the Moorish presence in Spain during the Middle Ages. The Moors brought with them a sweet treat called "alajú," which consisted of a mixture of honey, almonds, and spices sandwiched between two thin wafers. Over time, this confection made its way to the Iberian Peninsula and evolved into what we now know as Alfajores.

As Spanish explorers and settlers made their way to South America, they brought the recipe for Alfajores with them. The treat quickly became popular in countries like Argentina and Uruguay, where it was adapted to include local ingredients such as dulce de leche, a caramel-like spread made from milk and sugar.

Today, Alfajores come in many varieties, with different countries and regions putting their unique spin on the classic recipe. In Argentina, Alfajores are often made with two shortbread cookies filled with dulce de leche and coated in chocolate or powdered sugar. In Peru, Alfajores may feature a more crumbly cookie and be dusted with powdered sugar. Each version offers a delightful combination of textures and flavors that make Alfajores a true culinary delight.
